Which tank do I need?
Most heating oil storage tanks are either Single Skinned or Bunded. Single Skinned oil tanks have one layer, and are usually used for small domestic properties, where there are less environmental risks.
Bunded oil tanks have two layers - an inner and an outer tank. The inner tank is used to store oil, and the outer tank prevents it from spilling. We usually recommend bunded tanks, as they are more environmentally friendly.
Please note that a Single Skinned storage tank cannot be installed if any of the following applies:
- The tank size is in excess of 2500 litres
- The tank is located within 10m of controlled water (river, ditch, septic tank, etc.)
- The tank is located where a spillage could enter an open drain
- The tank is within 50m of a well, borehole or spring
- The tank is in close proximity to any other environmental hazard
- The tank is going to be installed on a commercial property

Does the oil tank need a base?
It is important to give domestic oil storage tanks, whether of steel or plastic, stable bases and supports. This makes them safe and will protect the environment.
During the life of an installation, an oil storage tank base will need to provide continual structural support even though ground conditions may alter from season to season and year to year.
How big and what should the base be made of?
To comply with British Standards, the base material should be one of the following laid hardcore to give an imperforate base:
- Concrete at least 100mm thick
- Paving stones at least 50mm thick
- Stonework at least 50mm thick
The overall size of the base should be larger than the oil storage tank and any integral oil storage tank bund, so that when the oil storage tank is installed, the base has a clear projection of a minimum of 300mm around all sides of the oil storage tank.
